August 24, 2021

Last week, Psychological and Brain Sciences Professor Mary Hegarty participated in a live online discussion about how to best prepare communities for the imminent threat of tropical weather events, such as the recent Hurricane Henri which made landfall in Rhode Island. In the discussion, which included climate journalist Andy Revkin and climate scientists Adam Sobel and Rebecca Morss, she described the nuances associated with different types of data visualizations in conveying relative risk of imminent storm landfall. Prof. Hegarty is the director of the Spatial Thinking Lab at UCSB, which, among other topics, researches the best ways to display uncertainty to improve human decision-making.
